Pushing
Let’s all say it together:
-We will not settle for coached pushing that doesn’t align with our goals
-We will not “purple push” - (aka holding our breath while pushing as hard as we possibly can)
There is not one “right way” to push, however there are several methods of pushing that are very effective AND simultaneously put less pressure down onto our pelvic floor muscles. These are the methods I recommend learning about and practicing to have your tool box full of options during labor.
Pushing while holding your breath can generate A LOT of pressure but it also puts A LOT of stress onto our muscles which can make our postpartum recovery more challenging and potentially increase our risk for tearing.
Allowing your pelvic floor muscles to relax and get out of the way and then using your breath to your advantage is my recommendation!
“J” pushing and the “shhhhh” push are my two favorite methods to teach people and are a great middle ground between “breathing your baby out “ (***which works for some people but defiantly not everyone) and “purple pushing”
***The fetal ejection reflex is something that not every woman will experience but it is recorded as a phenomenon where your body gets a sudden, large, spontaneous urge to push without you having to consciously push
Research shows this is more common in dark, quieter environments where the birthing person feels safe and supported
